Swing rigs will not fit the hull as the mast is already four to five inches in front of where they are today and would look rather strange. What was happening then was a change from hulls with the lead ballast as part of the fin to the use of a bulb keel.

There was also a rule change which allowed the lead bulb to stick out in front of the fin. This prompted the change to narrower fins but until carbon fibre was first used the full advantage of deeper draught was not really possible.
